Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives in a fire incident in Birbhum, West Bengal.
The Prime Minister said that the local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected by the mishap.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office shared: “Anguished to hear about the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Birbhum, West Bengal. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected in the mishap: PM @narendramodi”
The fire broke out at the hotel adjacent to Tarapith Police Station around 5 a.m. on Monday. According to the preliminary assessment by the fire department, the blaze is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Vidit Raj Bhundesh said seven people have died in the incident. He said that no smoke or flames were visible from outside the hotel when police and fire brigade teams reached the spot.
“Neither smoke nor flames were visible from the outside. Police and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene; 22 people were rescued using ladders, and 11 others were sent to the hospital. 7 people have lost their lives in this incident. An FSL team will arrive here. The hotel operators have been taken into custody after an FIR was registered; we are questioning them and are proceeding with further action and investigation,” said SP Vidit Raj.
