Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Met President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek. Reiterated our commitment to strengthening India’s long standing friendship with Iran across diverse sectors. We want to expand and diversify our trade basket in the times to come.”
“We had a discussion on the prevailing situation in the region. India will continue to support all efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace,” he added.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the meeting was “fruitful” and that the leaders reviewed recent developments in the West Asia region in addition to discussing bilateral ties.
During the talks, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues in the region should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
He also underlined the need for continued efforts to ensure peace and stability in West Asia, while stressing the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce.
PM Modi is in Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov to attend the 26th SCO Summit, where leaders will be discussing regional and global developments and ways to strengthen cooperation.
