India on Wednesday expressed solidarity with Nepal following devastating flash floods that swept through central districts bordering Tibet, with President Droupadi Murmu conveying her deepest sympathies to Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel and the people of the neighbouring country.
President Murmu said India stands ready to support the Nepal government’s relief and rescue efforts for those affected by the calamity.
“I convey my deepest sympathies to Rt Hon President Mr. Ramchandra Paudel @OOP_Nepal and the people of Nepal on the devastation caused by the flash floods today. We express our solidarity with Nepal at this difficult hour,” she said in a post on X.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan also expressed grief over the loss of lives and the devastation caused by the flash floods, offering condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the safe and swift rescue of those missing.
“Deeply grieved by the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by the flash floods in Nepal. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Radhakrishnan posted on social media.
The flash flood surged through the Bhote Koshi River around 9 a.m. local time, affecting Rasuwa and Dhading districts before spreading to Nuwakot and Chitwan. The disaster damaged at least four permanent bridges and several temporary structures, causing widespread disruption and destruction.
According to security officials, at least 46 bodies have been recovered so far, while nearly 500 people are reported missing. The missing include at least 105 Indians and 37 non-resident Indians, many of whom were travelling towards Tibet for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
Radhakrishnan prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and the safe rescue of all those still missing, saying that India’s thoughts are with the people of Nepal during the difficult hour.
India has reiterated its readiness to assist Nepal in relief and rescue operations as authorities continue efforts to locate those missing and assess the extent of the damage caused by the flash floods.
