Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other leaders on Friday extended greetings on World Sanskrit Day, underscoring the ancient language’s enduring contribution to India’s knowledge, philosophy, culture and intellectual traditions and calling for efforts to preserve it for future generations.
World Sanskrit Day is observed on Shravana Purnima to celebrate Sanskrit and its extensive contribution to literature, philosophy, science, spirituality and India’s broader intellectual heritage.
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan described Sanskrit as the “timeless language of India’s knowledge, philosophy, and civilization” and called for collective efforts to preserve, promote and propagate it.
He said Sanskrit has shaped India’s cultural heritage and intellectual traditions for generations and stressed the need to connect future generations with the language’s tradition of wisdom while enhancing its relevance in the modern world.
PM Modi said Sanskrit has remained a continuous vehicle of India’s knowledge, thought and creativity, while appreciating those in India and around the world who study and teach the language.
In his message, the Prime Minister said the occasion was an opportunity to celebrate the “timeless richness” of Sanskrit and recognise the efforts of people working to pass on the language’s enduring heritage to future generations. He also noted the continuing positive influence of Sanskrit across several fields.
HM Shah also highlighted the significance of Sanskrit, describing it as the foundational basis of India’s tradition of knowledge, culture and consciousness.
He said the language was as ancient as it was scientific and pointed to the Vedas, Upanishads and Shastras, which were written in Sanskrit and, according to him, have guided humanity on the path of knowledge for centuries.
HM Shah also paid tribute to scholars and teachers who have contributed to preserving Sanskrit and passing it on to the younger generation.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described Sanskrit as an invaluable heritage of India’s civilisation and said the language was deeply connected with the country’s tradition of knowledge and cultural consciousness.
CM Gupta highlighted its role in the Vedas, Upanishads, philosophy, literature and science, saying Sanskrit has enriched Indian knowledge and thought for centuries. She called for renewed efforts to preserve, promote and disseminate the language.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended greetings to Sanskrit enthusiasts, scholars and people of the state. Describing Sanskrit as more than just a language, he called it the “divine expression” of India’s enduring traditions of knowledge, philosophy, science and culture.
CM Yogi urged people to resolve to preserve, promote and widely propagate Sanskrit, stressing its place in India’s civilisational heritage.
