Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday described Booth Level Officers (BLOs) as the first point of contact between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and citizens, and called them a foundational pillar of the world’s largest democracy.
Kumar was interacting with more than 1,000 BLOs from different parts of Goa during a programme held in the state.
In his address, the CEC said the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections in India are carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, laws and instructions issued by the ECI.
He highlighted the important role played by Goa’s BLOs in the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls and commended them for safeguarding their integrity.
Kumar also noted that electoral rolls and the overall election process are subject to concurrent scrutiny by Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by recognised political parties, as well as polling and counting agents of candidates.
During the programme, short videos explaining the roles and responsibilities of BLOs in Konkani and BLAs in English were released.
The event also featured a cultural programme showcasing Goa’s rich traditions and heritage.
The BLOs participated in a question-and-answer session with the CEC, providing them an opportunity to directly raise their concerns and seek clarification on issues related to their responsibilities.
