Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday departed from New Delhi after attending the 18th BRICS Summit hosted by India.
Xi participated in the two-day summit at Bharat Mandapam and joined leaders of BRICS member countries in a tree plantation drive in the national capital. He also visited the Bharat Innovates Exposition at Bharat Mandapam along with other BRICS leaders.
During his visit, Xi held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the two leaders emphasising the need to take a strategic and long-term perspective of India-China relations and stressing that “differences should not become disputes”.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders welcomed the steady progress in bilateral relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.
The two sides reaffirmed that their ties should be guided by a strategic and long-term perspective. PM Modi highlighted the importance of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest in guiding bilateral relations.
PM Modi also stressed that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remain an essential basis for the continued development of India-China relations.
The Prime Minister underlined the need for both sides to adhere to existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues. The two leaders expressed commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, taking into account the broader political perspective of bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples.
The leaders also took note of progress in people-to-people ties and emphasised the need to further promote cultural exchanges, business linkages and greater mobility between India and China.
On economic and trade relations, the two sides underlined the need to address each other’s concerns, including structural trade imbalances and supply chain issues, and facilitate meaningful and predictable market access.
The MEA said the two leaders also agreed that India and China should continue to expand common ground on regional and global issues and work together in addressing shared challenges.
PM Modi appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contributions to the successful conduct of the 18th BRICS Summit.
The 18th BRICS Summit was hosted by India in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 under India’s chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” (IANS)
