External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said he held a detailed discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the latest developments related to the Gulf conflict on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Appreciate the conversation with FM @araghchi of Iran at the @UN #UNGA81. We discussed the latest developments regarding the Gulf conflict. Will continue to be in touch.”
The meeting comes amid continuing conflicts and tensions in West Asia, which have featured prominently in discussions on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Jaishankar has held a series of bilateral meetings with foreign leaders and counterparts during his UNGA engagements, including discussions on regional developments and global challenges.
India has been closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region, particularly their implications for energy security, maritime safety and global trade. Jaishankar has previously discussed the Gulf crisis with foreign counterparts during his UNGA engagements.
The discussion with Araghchi also comes against the backdrop of Iran’s diplomatic engagement at the UN General Assembly amid continuing tensions in West Asia. Araghchi is attending the UNGA in New York as Iran seeks diplomatic engagement over the regional conflict.
Jaishankar’s meetings during UNGA81 have covered a broad range of issues, including bilateral relations, regional security, economic and energy cooperation and multilateral coordination. His engagements have included counterparts from Armenia, Iraq, Maldives, Estonia, Ghana and several other countries.
The India-Iran engagement is also relevant to issues concerning energy security, maritime safety and regional stability, given Iran’s role in the Gulf and India’s economic interests in the region.
