External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Wednesday and discussed measures to further strengthen the India-US strategic partnership.
Following the meeting, Rubio said the two sides discussed building on the strategic partnership and coordinating on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts.
Jaishankar said he reiterated India’s interests and concerns regarding the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 (SRIA). The two leaders also discussed the situations in the Gulf and Ukraine, according to Jaishankar.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week, where Jaishankar is holding a series of meetings with world leaders and senior diplomats.
Jaishankar is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Saturday afternoon during the session beginning at 3 PM local time.
India-US relations have continued to see cooperation across several areas, even as differences remain over issues including proposed US measures concerning purchases of Russian oil and the ongoing trade negotiations.
India and the United States are also members of the Quad, along with Japan and Australia. The four countries have been working together on issues related to security and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
At the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi in May, the members reiterated cooperation in areas including maritime security, port infrastructure and energy.
