President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday graced the 75th annual convocation ceremony of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara, Gujarat.
Addressing the graduating students, the President highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in higher education. She said that solutions to contemporary challenges cannot be confined to a single discipline and require perspectives from science, arts, history, economics and sociology.
The President said universities need to remain alert and dynamic to address emerging challenges through diverse streams of knowledge.
She urged the graduating students to reflect on the purpose of their education and use their knowledge for the benefit of the nation and society. She said that when students prioritise the interests of the country and society in their professional lives, their own progress would also bring them greater satisfaction.
President Murmu said education becomes meaningful when it contributes to the welfare of the country and society. She encouraged engineers to develop technologies that improve people’s lives, doctors to view their profession as a form of service, and scientists to work towards solutions that benefit humanity.
She also urged artists and writers to enrich social sensitivity, entrepreneurs to create employment and opportunities alongside wealth, and teachers to nurture a generation that values both India’s heritage and progress.
Referring to public life, the President said those holding positions should view them as a responsibility rather than a source of authority.
The President said India is moving towards the national goal of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, envisioned as a country where quality education and healthcare are accessible to all, science and technology are used for human welfare, and equality of opportunity is ensured.
She emphasised that universities and young people have an important role to play in achieving these national goals.
