The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in coordination with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Gujarat, has foiled a major maritime narcotics smuggling attempt in the Arabian Sea, west of Lakshadweep.
The operation, conducted on September 25, resulted in the seizure of approximately 526 kg of high-grade narcotic substances, including heroin and methamphetamine, worth more than Rs 3,000 crore, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Five Pakistani nationals operating the vessel were also apprehended during the operation.
Acting on intelligence inputs, Indian Coast Guard assets carried out sea-air surveillance and persistent tracking of the suspected vessel before launching a coordinated hot pursuit.
The operation culminated in the interception and boarding of a suspicious Iranian dhow in the high seas.
Following the interception, the dhow, apprehended crew and seized contraband were escorted under armed security to Mumbai for joint interrogation and further investigation.
The case will subsequently undergo comprehensive multi-agency legal proceedings.
The successful operation is being viewed as a significant contribution towards the national vision of a ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ and highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s role in combating maritime narcotics trafficking.
The ICG has reiterated its commitment to maintaining zero tolerance towards illicit activities in India’s maritime zones.
