India has aligned skilled job roles with around 20 countries as part of efforts to create more overseas employment opportunities for its workforce, a senior official from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) said on Wednesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, MSDE Senior Economic Advisor Manisha Sensarma said the government is mapping the demand for skilled workers across different countries, particularly as several global economies face ageing populations.
She said the exercise to align job roles with countries has already been initiated, with around 20 countries covered so far.
Sensarma said there is significant overseas demand for workers in sectors such as caregiving, construction and other skilled and semi-skilled occupations, including in the UAE and other countries.
She said India has a demographic advantage, while several economies globally are experiencing ageing populations. The government is therefore working to align the skills of Indian workers with requirements in international labour markets.
The initiative will provide trained Indian workers with the option of taking up employment abroad by ensuring that their skills correspond with the requirements of overseas markets.
Sensarma said India is also aligning its training standards with international requirements so that the country’s workforce can meet industry demand both domestically and overseas.
Meanwhile, India is participating in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 with its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors across 63 skill categories.
The competition is being held in Shanghai from September 22 to 27.
