India and Vietnam on Thursday reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional stability and peace as senior military leaders from the two countries discussed ways to deepen defence cooperation and military-to-military engagement.
Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth received Lieutenant General Le Van Huong, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, who is on an official visit to India.
During the visit, Lieutenant General Huong paid tributes to India’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block.
He was subsequently received by General Dhiraj Seth, with the two military leaders holding discussions on measures to strengthen defence cooperation and military-to-military engagement.
The Indian Army said the discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment of the two armies to regional stability and peace.
Defence ties under strategic partnership
The latest engagement comes weeks after India and Vietnam held high-level defence talks aimed at further strengthening bilateral defence cooperation under the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international security issues of mutual concern.
During his official visit to Vietnam last month, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh held talks with General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Minister of National Defence.
The discussions reviewed developments in Vietnam-India defence cooperation, with particular emphasis on strengthening cooperation between the two air forces, capacity building and professional exchanges.
The two sides also discussed regional and international security issues and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen defence cooperation under the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The latest Army-level engagement is expected to further strengthen military-to-military ties between India and Vietnam.
