India’s digital transformation is no longer limited to smartphones, digital payments or online government services. Behind the digital services used by millions of Indians every day is a powerful and expanding infrastructure of data centres, cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence and high-speed connectivity. The rapid growth of India’s data-centre ecosystem shows how the country is preparing for the next phase of its digital journey.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently emphasised technology, digital infrastructure and innovation as important pillars of India’s development. The expansion of data centres is now emerging as an important part of this vision. It is helping create the infrastructure needed to support a growing digital economy and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
The scale of this transformation is commendable. India’s installed data-centre power capacity has increased from around 375 MW in 2020 to 1.57 GW as of August 2026. This significant expansion reflects the rapidly rising demand for computing power, data storage and digital services. The government has also highlighted the potential for further large-scale investment in the sector.
Data centres are sometimes described as the invisible engines of the digital economy. They support banking, e-Governance, online services, cloud computing and increasingly AI-based applications. As more citizens and businesses use digital services, the need for secure, reliable and continuously available computing infrastructure is also increasing.
The government has been building this foundation over several years. The National Informatics Centre has established major National Data Centres in Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar, along with smaller data centres in several state capitals. These facilities support government institutions and help provide reliable digital services.
This is an important part of the larger digital India journey associated with Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on technology-led development. The objective is not simply to increase the use of technology but to create the infrastructure and capabilities required to sustain India’s digital growth.
One notable feature of the government’s approach is that data centres are being developed alongside other technology initiatives. The second phase of the Semicon India Programme, or Semicon 2.0, was approved in July 2026 with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore. The programme aims to build a trusted and resilient semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Similarly, the IndiaAI Mission has a budgetary outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore to develop a comprehensive AI ecosystem. Support for the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme has also been increased from ₹22,000 crore to ₹40,000 crore. The government has launched PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware to strengthen domestic manufacturing of products such as servers and reduce import dependence. Taken together, these initiatives show a broader strategy- India needs not only digital users but also the physical infrastructure, hardware, computing capacity and technological capabilities behind the digital economy.
The growth of Artificial Intelligence is creating a new level of demand for computing infrastructure. Government data show that about 38,231 GPUs have been onboarded through 14 empanelled service providers and data centres under the AI compute capacity framework. These resources are being made available to eligible startups, researchers and academia at a subsidised average rate of ₹65 per hour.
This is significant because access to computing power can determine how quickly startups, researchers and institutions can experiment with AI and develop new applications. In June 2026, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted a proposed investment of around ₹3 lakh crore by AirTrunk to develop 5 GW of data-centre capacity in India. He noted that such investment could strengthen India’s position in cloud computing and AI while supporting employment, local supply chains and innovation.
The expansion of data centres also brings responsibilities. These facilities require substantial electricity and depending on cooling systems, water. The government has therefore emphasised energy efficiency, renewable energy and improved cooling technologies.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has noted the adoption of technologies such as direct-to-chip liquid cooling, adiabatic cooling, immersion cooling and closed-loop liquid cooling. The government has also highlighted energy-efficiency and water-conservation provisions under the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code. This focus is important because India’s digital expansion must go hand in hand with responsible use of natural resources.
India’s data-centre growth is ultimately about much more than buildings filled with servers. It is about creating the digital foundation for the economy of the future. From Digital India and e-Governance to semiconductors, AI, electronics manufacturing and cloud computing, the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed technology at the centre of its development strategy. The growing data-centre ecosystem is another important component of this larger transformation.
India is entering an era in which computing power, data and Artificial Intelligence will increasingly influence business, governance, education, research and everyday life. Building the necessary infrastructure today can help the country respond to these changes with greater capacity and confidence.
