India’s overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above increased to 55.6 per cent in August 2026, up from 55.4 per cent in July, according to the latest Monthly Bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).
The latest figures indicate a strengthening of labour force participation, particularly in rural areas, along with an improvement in the overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and a decline in rural unemployment.
The PLFS, conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, provides monthly estimates of key labour market indicators based on the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach.
Rural LFPR records year-on-year rise
The LFPR in rural areas rose to 58.2 per cent in August, from 58.0 per cent in July. In urban areas, the rate remained unchanged at 50.4 per cent.
Compared to August 2025, the overall LFPR increased by 0.6 percentage point, from 55.0 per cent to 55.6 per cent.
Rural LFPR recorded a stronger year-on-year increase of 1.2 percentage points, rising from 57.0 per cent in August 2025 to 58.2 per cent in August 2026. Urban LFPR, however, declined marginally by 0.5 percentage point to 50.4 per cent.
Female labour force participation rises
The overall female LFPR increased for the second consecutive month, rising from 34.4 per cent in July to 34.8 per cent in August 2026.
The increase was driven largely by rural areas, where female LFPR rose from 38.8 per cent to 39.4 per cent during the month. Urban female LFPR remained broadly stable at 25.4 per cent, compared to 25.3 per cent in July.
On a year-on-year basis, overall female LFPR increased by 1.1 percentage points, from 33.7 per cent in August 2025 to 34.8 per cent in August 2026.
Rural female LFPR rose by 2 percentage points over the same period, from 37.4 per cent to 39.4 per cent, while urban female LFPR declined by 0.7 percentage point.
Overall WPR reaches 52.8%
The overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) increased to 52.8 per cent in August, from 52.5 per cent in July, marking the highest level recorded since March 2026.
The increase was primarily driven by rural areas, where WPR rose from 55.4 per cent to 55.8 per cent. Urban WPR remained unchanged at 47.0 per cent.
Compared to August 2025, overall WPR increased by 0.6 percentage point, from 52.2 per cent to 52.8 per cent. Rural WPR rose by 1.3 percentage points, while urban WPR declined by 0.5 percentage point.
The overall female WPR also increased year-on-year, reaching 33.0 per cent in August 2026, compared to 32.0 per cent a year earlier.
Rural unemployment falls to lowest level since January
The overall Unemployment Rate (UR) for persons aged 15 years and above declined marginally to 5.0 per cent in August, from 5.1 per cent in July.
Rural UR saw a sharper decline, falling from 4.5 per cent in July to 4.1 per cent in August, the lowest level recorded since January 2026. Urban UR remained broadly stable at 6.8 per cent, compared to 6.7 per cent in July.
On a year-on-year basis, overall and urban unemployment rates remained broadly stable, while rural UR declined by 0.2 percentage point, from 4.3 per cent in August 2025 to 4.1 per cent in August 2026.
Rural unemployment declines among both men and women
The decline in rural unemployment was observed among both male and female workers.
Overall male UR declined for the third consecutive month, reaching 4.9 per cent in August, compared to 5.4 per cent in May. Rural male UR fell from 4.6 per cent in July to 4.3 per cent in August, while urban male UR increased marginally from 5.9 per cent to 6.1 per cent.
Among women, overall UR declined for the second consecutive month to 5.1 per cent in August, from 5.9 per cent in June. Rural female UR fell from 4.3 per cent in July to 3.9 per cent in August, while urban female UR remained broadly stable.
PLFS based on over 3.7 lakh persons surveyed
The August 2026 monthly estimates are based on information collected from 3,70,160 persons across the country.
Of these, 2,11,353 persons were surveyed in rural areas, while 1,58,807 persons were surveyed in urban areas.
The August bulletin is the 17th monthly bulletin in the current PLFS series. The survey methodology was modified from January 2025 to provide monthly and quarterly estimates of key labour force indicators.
