Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India has guided the world on issues related to nature and the environment for centuries and is now working towards offering solutions to modern climate challenges.
Addressing the International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” organised by the National Green Tribunal in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said India’s environmental approach draws from its cultural traditions and longstanding commitment to nature.
During the conference, PM Modi also launched the NGT Mobile App, aimed at strengthening access to information and services related to the National Green Tribunal.
The Prime Minister said developing countries are often unfairly held responsible for carbon emissions, while highlighting India’s relatively low per capita emissions.
He said India’s per capita carbon emissions remain less than half the global average, while per capita emissions in developed countries are around six times higher than India’s.
PM Modi said India has consistently raised the issue on global platforms and called for continued determination in addressing climate change.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s progress in the environmental sector over the past 12 years, particularly in renewable energy.
He said India has made significant progress in meeting its climate commitments and has achieved its Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule.
PM Modi highlighted developments in non-fossil fuel capacity and solar energy, saying India’s performance in these areas is being discussed globally.
He said renewable energy has remained a major focus of India’s environmental efforts and has contributed significantly to environmental protection.
The two-day conference, being held on September 19 and 20, brings together judicial, governmental and legal stakeholders to deliberate on environmental and climate-related issues.
The inaugural session was attended by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, Attorney General R Venkataramani and NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava.
The conference is aimed at promoting dialogue on emerging environmental challenges and strengthening cooperation among judicial, governmental and other stakeholders.
