Journalist Payal Mehta, 46, an Assistant Editor with CNN-News18, passed away in Mumbai early Sunday.
According to her colleagues, Mehta developed uneasiness late Saturday night and was taken to a hospital at around 2 a.m. However, doctors could not find a pulse before treatment could be administered.
Condoling her demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Mehta as a hardworking journalist who remained closely connected with the ground and brought a deep understanding of national issues to her reporting.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Mehta would also be remembered for her kindness and warmth towards those around her. He expressed his condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed shock and sadness over Mehta’s passing. He recalled her dedicated coverage of Parliament and said she worked with commitment and professionalism.
Singh said Mehta would often be present from early morning until late at night during Parliament sessions, following proceedings and carrying out her journalistic responsibilities with dedication.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condoled Mehta’s demise, describing her as a hardworking and diligent journalist who covered Parliament and had a keen understanding of public affairs.
Condolences were also shared by colleagues and others from the media fraternity following her sudden demise.
