Punjab’s Lovely Professional University (LPU) has postponed its mid-term examinations after massive protests erupted on campus over the alleged rape of a student.
The university has also suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28.
“Students may, in consultation with their parents/guardians, travel to their hometowns during this 10-day period, if they wish to do so,” the university said in a statement.
“Students who stay back are advised to stay inside their hostels/places of residence and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in any unrest activities in the interest of their own safety,” it added.
Violence erupted on the university premises in Phagwara city of Punjab’s Kapurthala district on Sunday after protesting students allegedly vandalised property and blocked a stretch of National Highway-44, which connects New Delhi with Amritsar.
A large police force led by Additional Director General of Police M F Farooqui entered the campus late on Sunday night and conducted a flag march. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Satinder Singh, Deputy Inspector General (Jalandhar Range) Naveen Singla and Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora were among the officers accompanying the force.
Police said on Monday that traffic movement on the highway had been restored and the situation brought under control.
A police contingent remained deployed outside the university on Monday morning.
Police said on Sunday that a rape case had been registered against an unidentified person following a complaint by students. A special investigation team has been formed to probe the case.
