Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal participated in the G20 Energy Abundance Working Group meetings in Houston on September 15 and held bilateral discussions with senior leaders from the United States and Canada on strengthening energy cooperation.
Highlighting India’s progress in building a secure and resilient energy system, Manohar Lal noted that the country has achieved 552 GW of installed capacity, with non-fossil sources accounting for more than 50 per cent of the energy mix, besides making advances in solar power, energy storage, nuclear energy and clean cooking access, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Power.
He emphasised India’s commitment to technology-neutral and inclusive energy pathways and highlighted global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
The Minister also outlined India’s reforms to streamline approvals and improve regulatory predictability through digital platforms, including the National Single Window System, PARIVESH and PM Gati Shakti. He stressed that efficient permitting is critical for timely infrastructure development and called for greater G20 cooperation in capacity building and regulatory modernisation.
Manohar Lal met US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and discussed India’s power infrastructure requirements for artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and data centres, as well as the country’s nuclear expansion roadmap. Both sides reaffirmed cooperation under the US-India Energy Security Partnership, with a focus on clean energy, resilient infrastructure and emerging technologies.
He also held talks with Canadian Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Corey Hogan on cooperation in energy efficiency, low-emission technologies and offshore exploration under the Samundra Manthan scheme.
The Minister encouraged Canadian companies to participate in India’s expanding exploration and production sector and deepen engagement in emerging energy technologies.
Manohar Lal reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening energy security through diversification of energy sources, expansion of clean and reliable baseload capacity and accelerated adoption of emerging technologies, while pursuing a balanced and future-ready energy strategy through deeper international partnerships.
