NHAI to Upgrade 1033 Highway Helpline with AI, Real-Time Tracking

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to modernise its 1033 National Highway Helpline with artificial intelligence, real-time location tracking and smart emergency-response systems to provide faster assistance to highway users across the country.

The proposed Next Generation 1033 Helpline is aimed at improving emergency response during medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns and other highway-related incidents. The upgraded system will be designed to identify a caller’s location in real time, process calls in multiple Indian languages and facilitate quicker deployment of emergency services.

While technology will play a greater role in the new system, human operators will continue to remain central to the response mechanism, particularly in situations requiring judgement and decision-making.

1033 helpline handles around 15,000 calls daily

Introduced in 2018, the 1033 helpline operates round the clock and currently covers more than 1.46 lakh kilometres of National Highways.

The helpline assists motorists during medical emergencies and vehicle breakdowns and facilitates services such as ambulances, cranes and patrol vehicles. It also handles toll plaza and FASTag-related complaints and other issues faced by travellers on National Highways.

The service currently receives around 15,000 calls every day and provides assistance in multiple languages.

AI-enabled system to improve emergency response

Under the proposed Next Generation 1033 platform, NHAI plans to introduce intelligent systems for faster call handling and emergency dispatch.

Real-time location capture is expected to help response teams identify the precise location of a caller and reach the incident site more quickly. AI-assisted multilingual capabilities will also help the helpline handle calls in different Indian languages.

The system is also expected to support smart dispatch, enabling operators to identify and deploy the most suitable ambulance, crane or patrol vehicle based on the nature and location of an incident.

In addition, the platform will facilitate proactive alerts and advisories for highway users and improve coordination between the helpline, emergency services and National Highway operations teams.

Industry invited to develop next-generation platform

Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies and consortia for the development, design, deployment, operation and maintenance of the Next Generation 1033 Helpline and Call Centre.

The initiative will require expertise in software development, digital platforms, round-the-clock call-centre operations and emergency-response services. Companies operating in areas including mobility and ride-hailing, logistics, quick-commerce, public safety, Computer-Aided Dispatch, Voice AI and Indian-language speech recognition have been encouraged to participate.

IHMCL will also seek technical suggestions and industry inputs to develop a reliable, scalable and future-ready platform. Industry best practices will be considered while finalising the system’s requirements.
