Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the progress of the ongoing Census 2027 exercise, saying the first phase has nearly been completed across all states and Union Territories, with data of more than 32 crore families already recorded.
Addressing the nation in the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi described the Census as a national responsibility and urged citizens to actively participate in the exercise.
“A grand picture of the nation is currently emerging. This picture includes you, your family and even your neighbours. I am referring to India’s census,” the Prime Minister said.
He said census work was continuing in remote and snow-covered regions of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand, with several inspiring experiences emerging from these areas.
In Uttarakhand, the census exercise began in Mana village in Chamoli, known as the country’s first village, PM Modi said. He highlighted the participation of 83-year-old Purnima Rawat, with whom the process began in the village.
He also referred to Hardev Singh Rana, a homestay operator in Bagori village of Uttarkashi, who entered his details himself using digital means.
PM Modi urges citizens to use self-enumeration facility
The Prime Minister said citizens can participate in the census through the self-enumeration facility, which allows individuals to register information about themselves and their families using a mobile phone.
“The census is a national responsibility for all of us,” PM Modi said, recalling that he had urged citizens to participate in the exercise in his Independence Day address on August 15.
He said the self-registration facility is available in 16 languages in addition to Hindi, making it easier for citizens across the country to provide their information.
Explaining the process, PM Modi said citizens need to visit the census online portal, log in using their mobile number, enter their location and provide details about their family before submitting the information.
“The entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. And for that you do not need to upload any document,” he said.
After submitting the information, citizens receive a special ID that can be shared with the census enumerator when they visit their homes. The information provided online will subsequently be verified before being incorporated into the census record.
Over 2.6 crore people complete self-enumeration
PM Modi said the self-enumeration facility has already received significant participation, with more than 2 crore 60 lakh people entering their details through the census portal using mobile phones.
“So far, more than 2 crore 60 lakh people have already entered their details on the census portal via mobile – completing the self-enumeration,” he said.
Urging more citizens to participate, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of accurate census information for national planning.
“It will take a little of your time, but it is important for the nation, as accurate information about you and your family helps create a precise picture of the country’s future,” PM Modi said.
He said the information collected through the census would help create an accurate picture of India and its future, and appealed to citizens to fulfil their responsibility by providing their details accurately.
