Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a two-day international conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” organised by the National Green Tribunal at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
The conference is being held on September 19 and 20 and brings together environmental experts, members of the judiciary, senior government officials and representatives of various environmental institutions from India and abroad.
The inaugural session was attended by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, Attorney General R Venkataramani and NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava.
Judges from the Supreme Court and High Courts, District Court judges, Secretaries of various ministries, senior government officials and representatives of State Judicial Academies and State Legal Services Authorities are participating in the conference.
Representatives from State Expert Appraisal Committees, State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities and State Wetland Authorities are also taking part in the discussions.
The conference has also brought together eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries, providing an international platform for discussions on environmental and climate-related challenges.
According to the National Green Tribunal, the conference will focus on major environmental and climate challenges facing the world. Discussions will examine gaps in policymaking and implementation, exchange successful practices and explore ways to strengthen cooperation among institutions and stakeholders.
The two-day conference will feature four technical sessions covering key environmental issues. The discussions are expected to contribute towards developing a roadmap to address present and emerging environmental and climate challenges.
The NGT said the conference seeks to strengthen environmental justice and institutional cooperation while promoting dialogue on the complex relationship between environment, climate change, development and justice.
The valedictory session on Sunday will be attended by President Droupadi Murmu, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal, Supreme Court Judge Justice PS Narasimha, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
