Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a bilateral meeting with Évariste Ndayishimiye, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) and President of Burundi, on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
During the meeting, the two leaders recalled India’s role in bringing the African Union into the G20 as a permanent member during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023. They stressed that the India-AU partnership remains a key pillar of cooperation within the Global South.
The leaders also discussed the early convening of the 4th India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) at a mutually convenient date.
India appreciates AU efforts to combat Ebola outbreak
PM Modi commended the African Union leadership for its successful efforts in combating the Ebola outbreak.
The AU Chairperson appreciated the medical support extended by India to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to help mitigate the outbreak.
India-Burundi ties reviewed
The two leaders also reviewed bilateral relations between India and Burundi, which they noted continue to be characterised by warmth, solidarity and shared developmental aspirations.
Their discussions covered a range of areas, including economic cooperation, development partnership, agricultural modernisation, healthcare and capacity-building initiatives.
