Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders discussing bilateral ties, developments in West Asia and cooperation in multilateral forums.
The meeting was the second interaction between PM Modi and Pezeshkian in less than two weeks. The two leaders had earlier met on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek on August 31.
During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed various aspects of India-Iran bilateral relations.
PM Modi thanked Iran for its regular and high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings despite challenging circumstances. He said BRICS has the potential to promote the spirit of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability among countries of the Global South.
The Prime Minister also thanked Pezeshkian for participating in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.
India reiterates call for dialogue and diplomacy in West Asia
The two leaders also exchanged views on recent developments in West Asia.
PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues in the region should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He also stressed the need for continued efforts towards lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of seafarers.
PM Modi appreciated the continued cooperation between the two sides on issues of mutual interest in multilateral organizations, including BRICS.
