Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima Mustapha on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing the progress of the India-Nigeria Strategic Partnership and discussing ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
Vice President Shettima is leading Nigeria’s delegation to the BRICS Summit. The delegation includes ministers handling Foreign Affairs; Industry, Trade and Investment; Communication, Innovation and Digital Technology; Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; Women Affairs; and Science and Technology.
During the meeting, PM Modi and Shettima reviewed the multifaceted India-Nigeria relationship and expressed satisfaction over the steady progress made across various areas of cooperation.
The discussions focused on key sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, energy, agriculture, healthcare and digital technologies. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India-Nigeria Strategic Partnership.
India, Nigeria discuss Global South priorities
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, including the priorities and concerns of the Global South.
They emphasised the need to strengthen cooperation in multilateral forums and work together towards a more representative, inclusive and multipolar international order.
PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria and deepening its engagement with Africa.
Vice President Shettima, in turn, appreciated India’s development experience and its contribution to capacity building and economic development in Nigeria.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of India and Nigeria to building a stronger and forward-looking partnership, with both countries seeking to contribute to peace, prosperity and development in India, Nigeria and the wider Global South.
