Remembering India’s Nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, on her birth anniversary on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer, recalling her immense contribution to Indian music and culture.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “On her birth anniversary, I pay my respectful tribute to the revered Lata Didi, who brought glory to the country across the world through her divine singing talent. She not only enriched and adorned India with her melodious voice but also always encouraged every initiative aimed at the nation’s prosperity. Her unparalleled contribution to the world of Indian music will be remembered for generations to come.”
Lata Mangeshkar passed away in Mumbai in 2022 at the age of 92, leaving behind a vast musical legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
Often referred to as the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar was more than a playback singer; she was a towering figure in Indian music and culture.
Beginning her career in the 1940s, her voice came to define the sound of Hindi cinema while also leaving an enduring mark on Marathi and several other Indian-language music industries.
She recorded songs in more than 36 Indian languages. Her illustrious career included collaborations with some of India’s most celebrated composers, including Naushad, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and A.R. Rahman.
Songs such as Aayega Aanewala, Lag Jaa Gale, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon became enduring classics and remain deeply embedded in India’s musical and cultural memory.
Her extraordinary contribution to music earned her some of the country’s highest honours. She received the Padma Bhushan in 1969, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989, the Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001.
These honours recognised not only her exceptional artistic achievements but also her immense contribution to India’s cultural heritage.
