Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International Working President Ashok Singhal on his birth centenary, recalling his contribution to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and his efforts to address social discrimination and inequality.
In the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi said, “Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of a great personality who had dedicated his entire life to culture, society, and the nation. I am speaking of the revered late Ashok Singhal ji.”
Recalling Singhal’s life and his association with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, PM Modi said he had lived among society while leading a life marked by asceticism.
“Living amidst society, he led life like an ascetic,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister credited Singhal with providing direction and energy to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and said his contribution was reflected in the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
“The very direction and energy he imparted to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement veritably resulted in us witnessing the magnificent temple in Ayodhya today,” PM Modi said.
Recalling his own association with Singhal, the Prime Minister said he had been fortunate to observe his life closely and participate with him in the movement.
“I’ve been greatly fortunate… I’ve not only observed his life closely but also have had the opportunity to join him in this mission,” PM Modi said.
He also recalled thinking of Singhal while participating in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
“It was only natural for me to be reminded of Ashok ji repeatedly while participating in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram Mandir,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi highlights Singhal’s work against social discrimination
PM Modi said Singhal’s contributions beyond the Ram Mandir movement had received less attention, particularly his efforts against social discrimination and inequality.
“There are so many aspects about Ashok ji that do not receive much attention. Alongside the Ram Mandir movement, he also waged a major battle against social discrimination and inequality,” he said.
Recalling Singhal’s family background and education, PM Modi said he was born into an affluent family in Agra, with his father serving as a civil services official and several of his siblings holding senior positions.
Singhal himself was a graduate of IIT-BHU, the Prime Minister noted.
Despite his privileged background and educational qualifications, Singhal chose to dedicate his life to society and culture.
“He himself was a graduate of IIT BHU. Yet, despite all that, he dedicated his life to society and culture – this is the hallmark of great individuals,” PM Modi said.
