Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared an article by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan highlighting the growing potential of India’s Blue Economy and the role of sustainable fisheries in creating new opportunities for coastal communities.

He says India is now looking beyond its shores to unlock its marine wealth. Sustainable fisheries are creating new opportunities for coastal communities, youth and women. This is also strengthening the economic life of coastal India.”

The article authored by V-P Radhakrishnan notes that India has more than 11,000 km of coastline and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) spanning nearly 24 lakh square kilometres.
According to the Vice President, India is now the world’s second-largest fish-producing country, contributing around 8 per cent of global fish production. The fisheries and aquaculture sector supports the livelihoods of nearly 3 crore fishermen and fish farmers, while fish production crossed 195 lakh tonnes in 2024-25.
