Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Thursday congratulated wushu player Naorem Roshibina Devi for winning the silver medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Japan, and called her a “proud symbol of the state’s sporting spirit”.
Twenty-five-year-old Devi won the silver medal in the women’s 60kg sanda wushu event at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday. She lost 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the final.
Singh, in a social media post, said, “With this historic feat, she becomes the first Indian wushu athlete to win medals at three consecutive Asian Games. Her remarkable achievement has once again brought immense pride and honour to Manipur and the nation.”
“Roshibina is a shining inspiration to the youth of Manipur and a proud symbol of our state’s sporting spirit,” he added.
This was her third medal in the Asian Games. She had won bronze in Jakarta in 2018 and silver in Hangzhou in 2023.
State BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP A Sharda Devi also congratulated the wushu player.
“Her determination, discipline and fighting spirit are a shining example for the young athletes of Manipur and the entire nation. She has once again carried the name of Manipur high on the Asian sporting stage,” the BJP leader said.
Hailing from Kwasiphai Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur district, Roshibina’s farmer father — Naorem Damu Singh — was initially not inclined to allow her take up wushu but later relented after seeing his daughter’s passion for the sport.
