Saratchandra’s Works Offer Sensitive Portrayal of 19th-Century India: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to renowned Bengali writer Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary, highlighting the enduring relevance of his literary works and contribution to social reform.

Remembering the eminent writer, PM Modi said Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s works have been translated into every Indian language as well as several foreign languages.

The Prime Minister noted that his writings are remembered for their accurate and sensitive portrayal of 19th-century India, particularly Bengali society in rural areas.

In a post on X, PM Modi also highlighted Saratchandra’s commitment to social reform, women’s rights and nationalism, describing these aspects of his legacy as equally noteworthy.

“His works, translated into every Indian language and several foreign languages, are remembered for their accurate depiction of 19th century India, especially Bengali society in rural areas,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also called upon more young people to read Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s writings in the years ahead.

Saratchandra Chattopadhyay remains one of the most prominent figures in Bengali literature, with his works continuing to be read and translated across languages.
