Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Tamil Nadu’s Erode, Namakkal and Madurai districts on Tuesday, the weather department said, forecasting rain and strong winds across parts of the state over the next three days.
According to a weather bulletin, moderate rain accompanied by strong winds is likely at isolated places in 16 districts on Tuesday. The affected areas include districts along the Western Ghats as well as Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchirappalli and Perambalur.
Chennai and adjoining areas are likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the evening or night.
The heavier rainfall activity is expected to shift towards western and northern Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Isolated heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely at one or two places in the Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, the department said.
Moderate rain is also expected at isolated places in 16 districts on Wednesday, including areas along the Western Ghats as well as Tirupattur, Vellore and Sivaganga.
The Nilgiris and Coimbatore are likely to receive heavy rain, with thunderstorms and strong winds at isolated places on Wednesday and Thursday.
The forecast indicates that unsettled weather could persist over western parts of the state, although areas likely to receive heavy rain may change from day to day.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in some parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to remain 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather department said rainfall could vary significantly within the districts covered by the forecast, with heavy rain expected only at isolated locations. Some areas may remain dry even as brief spells of strong winds accompany thunderstorms elsewhere.
The highest likelihood of isolated heavy rain is in Erode, Namakkal and Madurai on Tuesday, with the focus shifting towards the Nilgiris and adjoining districts on Wednesday.
