President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side clinched the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya.
India defeated Sri Lanka in the women’s T20 gold-medal match to successfully defend the title it won at the previous edition of the Asian Games.
In a post on X, the President congratulated the entire team and praised its performance throughout the tournament.
She said the team’s achievement has made the country proud and described the players as a source of inspiration for the youth, particularly girls.
The Indian women’s team entered the Asian Games as defending champions and secured India’s first gold medal of the ongoing edition.
The victory comes soon after India’s successful Asia Cup campaign, where the team defeated Sri Lanka in the final to claim its eighth title.
In the Asia Cup final, Smriti Mandhana played a key role with a 79-run knock as India posted 216/3. Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma, Shreyanka Patil and Sree Charani then combined to claim nine wickets as India registered a comprehensive victory.
The Asian Games triumph also marks India’s seventh gold medal overall in the Games, while the women’s cricket team has now successfully defended its T20 title.
India also recorded the highest total in the history of the women’s Asian Games and produced a record-breaking performance in the gold-medal clash.
