Heavy rain is likely in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, with strong winds expected in some areas, according to the weather department.
In a statement, the department said a low-pressure system prevailing over Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka was influencing weather conditions across the region.
Heavy rainfall is forecast over the hilly areas of Coimbatore district and in the Nilgiris, Theni, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts. Strong winds are also likely to accompany the showers in these areas.
Moderate rainfall is expected at some places in Tiruppur, Erode, Salem and Namakkal, as well as Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts.
In central Tamil Nadu and the Cauvery delta region, moderate showers are likely in Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam.
Several southern districts, including Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari, are also likely to receive moderate rainfall.
In Chennai, moderate rain is expected in some areas, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Rainfall intensity could vary across different parts of the city.
The weather department attributed the widespread rainfall to the prevailing low-pressure system over Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka.
