IBSAMAR IX 2026 Concludes in South Africa, Strengthens India-Brazil-South Africa Naval Cooperation

The ninth edition of the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime (IBSAMAR) Exercise 2026 concluded at Simon’s Town, South Africa, on October 20, reinforcing maritime cooperation and interoperability among the three participating navies. The exercise brought together the Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies for professional interactions and maritime operations aimed at enhancing operational coordination and mutual understanding.

Ten Days of Joint Training and Maritime Operations

The closing ceremony marked the culmination of ten days of joint activities conducted during the harbour and sea phases. Personnel from the participating navies engaged in professional exchanges, operational interactions and joint training, gaining insights into each other’s procedures, capabilities and methods of operating at sea.

These activities strengthened familiarity and confidence among the participating navies, enabling them to work together more effectively in the maritime domain, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence.

Exercise Translates Diplomatic Ties into Naval Cooperation

Addressing the gathering at the closing ceremony, the Commanding Officer of INS Tarkash highlighted that exercises such as IBSAMAR provide a unique platform to translate longstanding diplomatic relations into meaningful naval cooperation.

He emphasised that the value of such exercises extends beyond joint operations at sea to the professional relationships built through shared experiences, exchanges and mutual learning among personnel.

Trilateral Partnership for Safe and Secure Seas

IBSAMAR reflects the enduring maritime partnership among India, Brazil and South Africa. Located across three continents and connected by the maritime domain, the three countries share a common interest in maintaining safe, secure and stable seas.

The trilateral exercise provides an opportunity for their navies to address common maritime challenges, exchange best practices and strengthen their ability to operate together, contributing to a peaceful maritime environment.

Strengthening Interoperability and Long-Term Maritime Ties

The exercise reaffirmed the importance of jointmanship at sea, with interoperability developed through repeated interactions, common training and a shared understanding of maritime operations. The professional bonds formed among the crews of participating naval assets are expected to strengthen institutional linkages and provide a foundation for future cooperation.

The successful conclusion of IBSAMAR IX 2026 underscores the shared commitment of India, Brazil and South Africa to deepening maritime cooperation and enhancing interoperability in support of safe, secure and open seas underpinned by a rules-based order.
