India-Australia Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 Begins in Thiruvananthapuram

The fifth edition of the India-Australia Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 commenced on Monday at the Foreign Training Node in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam, with around 120 personnel each from the Indian Army and the Australian Army participating in the exercise.

The exercise, scheduled till November 1, aims to enhance interoperability, jointmanship, and operational coordination between the two armies, with a focus on joint operations in island and coastal environments.

The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from the Garhwal Rifles, along with personnel from other arms and services, while the Australian Army contingent comprises troops from the 13 Brigade, according to a press release by the Ministry of Defence.

Focus on Joint Operations and Combat Training

During the exercise, troops from both armies will undertake joint planning, tactical drills and combat-oriented training under realistic operational conditions, including aerial and maritime dimensions. The training will focus on coordinated operations in coastal and island environments, surveillance and reconnaissance, protection of vital installations, and responses to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) contingencies. The exercise will also facilitate the exchange of professional experience and best practices between the participating forces.

For the first time, an observer delegation from New Zealand will also participate in the exercise.

Enhancing Interoperability in Island and Coastal Terrain

The exercise will be conducted under the theme “Joint Sub-Conventional Operations in Island and Coastal Environment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate”. It aims to develop a common understanding of tactics, techniques, and procedures for operations in island and coastal terrain while strengthening interoperability and coordination between the two armies.

The fourth edition of AUSTRAHIND was held at Irwin Barracks in Perth, Australia, from October 13 to 26, 2025.

Exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 will further strengthen military-to-military cooperation and mutual trust between India and Australia, reinforcing their shared commitment to peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
