“Completely unacceptable”: India condemns attacks targeting Saudi airports

India has condemned the recent attacks targeting Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, calling the targeting of civilian infrastructure “completely unacceptable.”

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said India condemns the attacks carried out over the past few days against the two airports.

“The targeting of civilian infrastructure is completely unacceptable,” the MEA said.

India expressed its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attacks.

“We express deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We wish speedy recovery for those injured,” the MEA said.

India also expressed solidarity with the people and government of Saudi Arabia.

“We express solidarity and stand with the people and government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the statement added.

According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, the attacks on Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport took place separately on October 6 and 7.

The attacks reportedly left three people dead and 36 injured. Two people were killed and 28 injured at Abha Airport, while one person was killed and eight injured at King Khalid International Airport.

Authorities shifted the injured to hospitals for treatment and assessed damage to the facilities while checking their safety.

The developments came amid heightened tensions involving Yemen’s Houthi militia and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi-led coalition forces said they had carried out strikes against military targets belonging to the Houthi militia following attacks on civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia.

Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki said 82 military targets were destroyed across Yemen’s Saada, Al Hudaydah, Al Jawf and Ma’rib governorates.

According to the coalition, the targets included ballistic missile sites, command and control centres, communication systems, missile and weapons storage facilities and gathering locations.

The coalition also said it destroyed a ballistic missile launch platform in Sanaa that was allegedly being prepared for an imminent attack against Saudi Arabia.

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi also condemned the attacks, describing them as systematic attacks targeting civilians and warning that attacks on civilian airports and the endangerment of travellers, workers and civilians represented a dangerous escalation.

The US Mission in Saudi Arabia meanwhile urged American citizens to exercise heightened vigilance amid threats against airports and airspace in the Kingdom, warning of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that the group had carried out missile attacks against Saudi and Saudi-backed targets.

India’s condemnation comes as the attacks raise fresh concerns over the safety of civilian infrastructure and the broader security situation in the region.
