Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Monday inaugurated a workplace creche and a blood donation camp at Kartavya Bhawan-3 in New Delhi, highlighting the need to combine administrative reforms with employee welfare.
The creche, established by putting more than 2,000 square feet of underutilised office space to use under Special Swachhata Campaign 6.0, can accommodate 30–35 children. Twenty-seven children have already been enrolled, with admissions underway for the remaining places.
More than 100 people enrolled for the blood donation camp, reflecting participation by Central government employees.
Singh said governance reforms should extend beyond simplifying procedures and improving transparency to address employees’ practical needs. Dependable workplace childcare, he said, could help working parents concentrate on their professional responsibilities.
Established in accordance with Ministry of Women and Child Development guidelines, the creche includes child-friendly washrooms, a play area, toys and learning materials, audio-visual equipment, drinking water, a sleeping area, a feeding room and a kitchen or dry pantry. Safety provisions include CCTV surveillance, cushioned flooring and walls, and a medical kit.
Singh said employees whose children had joined the facility reported that it had made it easier to focus on work, knowing their children were receiving appropriate care.
The facility will be managed by Grih Kalyan Kendra, a society under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) that undertakes welfare activities for Central government employees and their families. It operates around six other creches in Delhi and has partnered with NGO Mobile Creches to train teachers and caregivers.
Singh said a modern, citizen-centric administration should also provide a working environment marked by care, dignity and sensitivity to employees’ needs.
In a related initiative under Special Campaign 6.0, DoPT replaced 18 diesel and petrol vehicles with electric vehicles to support cleaner government operations.
DoPT Secretary Rachna Shah and other senior officials attended the programme.
