Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, inaugurated residential accommodation, health facilities and supporting infrastructure under Project Seabird Phase IIA at Naval Base Karwar on October 15.
The facilities include five residential towers comprising 300 dwelling units for naval defence civilians and a Station Health Organisation complex. The health infrastructure forms part of the expansion of INHS Patanjali, the base hospital, to a capacity of 409 beds.
A two-lakh-litre hilltop water reservoir and a sewage treatment plant support the new facilities.
Vatsayan also inaugurated an integrated solid waste management facility and an access gate with bridge infrastructure accommodating four-lane vehicular traffic, alongside dedicated pedestrian and cycle pathways. The developments are intended to strengthen environmental management and improve access as the naval base expands.
Vice Admiral Vivek Dahiya, Director General Seabird, and other senior officers attended the inauguration.
Phase IIA of Project Seabird includes the construction of a dual-use naval air station, a full-fledged naval dockyard and logistics facilities for ships and aircraft.
The naval base, housing approximately 10,000 uniformed and civilian personnel along with their families, is expected to support the local economy, industry and tourism while creating direct and indirect employment opportunities in the Uttara Kannada region.
The project conforms to applicable Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Indian Green Building Council norms and is expected to achieve an IGBC Gold rating upon completion.
More than 90% of its materials and equipment are sourced domestically, aligning the project with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
