The third season of the Nepal Premier League, the country’s premier franchise-based T20 cricket tournament, begins today in Kirtipur. Eight teams will compete for the title, with international cricket stars adding to the excitement. This season also marks a major milestone for Nepali cricket, with International Cricket Council recognition and the introduction of the Decision Review System.
Cricket fever is set to grip Nepal as the third season of the Nepal Premier League gets underway at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, near Kathmandu.
The opening match will see defending champions Lumbini Lions take on last season’s runners-up, Sudurpaschim Royals. The tournament will continue until November 21, with eight franchises competing for the title.
One of the major developments this season is the International Cricket Council’s recognition of the tournament. This is expected to strengthen the league’s profile and provide greater visibility to Nepali cricket.
The introduction of the Decision Review System, or DRS, is another key feature. It will allow teams to challenge certain umpiring decisions, adding another layer of technology to the competition.
The tournament has also attracted prominent international players, including former Australian captain David Warner, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell, South African batter David Miller and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.
Their participation is expected to provide Nepali players with valuable opportunities to compete alongside experienced international cricketers.
The stakes are higher this season, with the winners set to receive 15 million Nepali rupees, equivalent to approximately 99 thousand US dollars. The runners-up will receive around 53 thousand dollars, while the teams finishing third and fourth will receive approximately 26 thousand and 20 thousand dollars, respectively.
With international players, new technology and growing interest in franchise cricket, the Nepal Premier League is looking to expand its reach and strengthen Nepal’s presence on the international cricket stage.
For Nepali cricket, the tournament offers a platform to showcase local talent and inspire the next generation of players.
