Next-generation offshore patrol vessel ‘Shreyas’ launched at GRSE in Kolkata

The Indian Navy’s next-generation offshore patrol vessel ‘Shreyas’ was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata on Saturday, marking another milestone in indigenous shipbuilding.

The vessel, designated Yard 3040, was launched by Reyman Kochhar in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. Senior representatives from the Navy, Ministry of Defence, GRSE and industry partners attended the ceremony, which reflected naval traditions and ethos.

Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels are being constructed concurrently at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa and GRSE in Kolkata.

The indigenously designed and built ships will augment the Navy’s existing offshore patrol vessels for multi-domain operations, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy missions.

The vessels draw their names from India’s heritage. ‘Shreyas’ means “best” or “most excellent” in Sanskrit.

The launch advances the Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding efforts in line with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
