PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana completes one year, focuses on agricltural growth in 100 districts

The Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) has completed its first year, with all 100 identified agricultural districts preparing District Action Plans and the average score across six key objectives rising from 18.85 in April 2026 to 46.89 in August 2026.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2025, the six-year initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity, irrigation infrastructure, crop diversification, post-harvest storage, access to agricultural credit and governance through district-specific interventions. The scheme brings together 36 Central government schemes across 11 Ministries and Departments, alongside State schemes and private-sector participation, to address local agricultural challenges.

A District-Level Approach to Agricultural Development

Approved by the Union Cabinet on July 16, 2025, PMDDKY began in the financial year 2025-26. It targets 100 Aspirational Agricultural Districts identified on the basis of low agricultural productivity, low cropping intensity and low agricultural credit disbursement. The selection process also considered the share of net cropped area and operational landholdings in each State and Union Territory, ensuring that every State has at least one selected district.

The scheme seeks to address gaps in irrigation, farm productivity, institutional finance and post-harvest infrastructure by aligning government interventions with the specific requirements of each district.

Implementation and Monitoring

PMDDKY follows a three-tier implementation structure involving district, State and national-level committees. District Action Plans are prepared using baseline assessments and diagnostic analysis, with targets, annual milestones and interventions linked to relevant government schemes.

At the district level, the District Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana Samiti, headed by the District Collector or District Magistrate, prepares and implements the action plan. State-level committees, headed by the Chief Secretary, review and monitor these plans, while national-level committees oversee implementation.

Progress is tracked through 121 indicators across 36 schemes, comprising 74 output indicators and 47 outcome indicators. The scheme’s dashboard became operational in the last week of October 2025, and monthly rankings based on output indicators began in November 2025.

According to official data, the average scores improved across all six objectives between April and August 2026. The agricultural productivity score rose from 1.50 to 8.08, while the score for crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices increased from 4.08 to 10.18. The score for post-harvest storage improved from 2.14 to 5.19, and irrigation infrastructure rose from 1.38 to 4.91. Agricultural credit access increased from 2.40 to 6.53, while governance and service delivery improved from 7.41 to 12.05.

These scores indicate progress in the scheme’s monitored indicators but do not, by themselves, establish equivalent increases in farm output or farmers’ incomes.

FPOs and Local Agricultural Initiatives

The scheme has also encouraged Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to share experiences and develop market opportunities. The PM-DDKY FPO Sangam, held in December 2025, brought together more than 72 FPOs from 15 States and 33 PMDDKY districts. Discussions covered natural farming, oilseeds, beekeeping, protected cultivation, micro-irrigation, institutional finance and digital agriculture.

In Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, Desaiganj Farmers Producer Company Limited, with 800 farmer members, operates a rice processing unit with a capacity of three tonnes per hour and a warehouse with a capacity of 900 metric tonnes. The FPO recorded a turnover of Rs 1.24 crore in the financial year 2025-26.

In Tumakuru, Karnataka, Tiptur Farmer Producer Company Limited, with 750 farmer members, supplies ball copra to a French multinational company. It recorded a turnover of Rs 1.60 crore in 2025-26 and had aggregated more than 138 tonnes of copra worth over Rs 1.9 crore as of September 12, 2026.

In Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, Jaisalmer Krishi Fed Producer Company Limited promotes Integrated Pest Management-based cumin cultivation across 2,000 acres and uses solar-powered sprinkler irrigation across 500 acres. The initiative focuses on efficient water use, renewable energy and farm productivity.

The Department of Public Enterprises has included the adoption of PMDDKY districts by Central Public Sector Enterprises for corporate social responsibility activities in the financial years 2026-27 and 2027-28.
