Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, praying for the blessings of Maa Durga to bring happiness, compassion and hope to society.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister conveyed his wishes in both English and Bengali, expressing hope for peace and prosperity for all.
“Shubho Mahalaya! We seek the blessings of Maa Durga. May the blessings fill our society with happiness, compassion and hope. May there be peace and prosperity all around,” the Prime Minister said.
Mahalaya holds special significance, particularly in West Bengal and among Bengali communities, as it traditionally marks the beginning of the Durga Puja festivities. The occasion is associated with the belief that Goddess Durga begins her journey to Earth to vanquish the demon Mahishasura.
Traditionally, devotees observe Mahalaya by listening to devotional hymns and recitations from the Devi Mahatmya, also known as the Chandi Path. Many Bengali households begin the day in the early hours by listening to Mahishasuramardini, a celebrated collection of devotional songs and chants narrating the glory of Goddess Durga and her victory over Mahishasura.
The occasion is also associated with paying homage to ancestors through traditional rituals and offerings.
Durga Puja, one of the most prominent festivals celebrated in West Bengal, commemorates the victory of good over evil and is marked by religious ceremonies, cultural programmes and community celebrations.
