Over 1.93 lakh additional houses were approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) on Friday, taking the total number of houses sanctioned under the scheme to 20.80 lakh.
The approvals were granted at the 10th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The newly approved houses fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) verticals of PMAY-U 2.0. The approvals cover eligible urban families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in 11 states, according to a press release issued by the Ministry.
Uttar Pradesh received approval for 73,182 houses, followed by Bihar with 52,866 and West Bengal with 16,559. Other approvals include 14,290 houses in Gujarat, 18,120 in Telangana, 6,560 in Andhra Pradesh, 4,670 in Chhattisgarh, 3,116 in Karnataka, 3,126 in Odisha, 1,003 in Mizoram and 29 in Sikkim.
The meeting was attended by Kumar Ravikant Singh, Joint Secretary and Mission Director, Housing for All; Sanjeet, Joint Secretary and Financial Adviser; Vaibhav Rundwal, Director, Housing for All; other Ministry officials; and Mission Directors and representatives from the participating states.
The Committee also discussed measures to accelerate the implementation of PMAY-U 2.0, with emphasis on timely approvals, effective monitoring and the delivery of housing benefits to eligible beneficiaries.
Launched in September 2024, PMAY-U 2.0 aims to provide financial assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh per family to one crore additional urban poor and middle-class families to construct or purchase a pucca house. The scheme covers eligible Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) families with an annual household income of up to ₹9 lakh.
The scheme prioritises women-led development by providing women in the family with ownership or co-ownership of houses. Of the 20.80 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, 20.16 lakh, or 97 per cent, have been allotted to women under individual or joint ownership.
In addition, 1.81 lakh houses have been sanctioned for senior citizens, 3.61 lakh for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 1.06 lakh for Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries and 9.14 lakh for Other Backward Classes beneficiaries, reflecting the scheme’s focus on equitable access to safe and affordable housing.
Across PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, the Government has sanctioned more than 1.27 crore houses, of which 1.01 crore have been completed.
