President Murmu Calls for Financial Support, Wider Market Access for Artists at Lalit Kala Akademi Awards

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday emphasised the need for financial support, wider market access and stronger connections with art collectors to create better opportunities for artists. She made the remarks while presenting the Lalit Kala Akademi awards to selected artists of the 65th National Exhibition of Art in New Delhi on Wednesday.

President Murmu expressed happiness that the Lalit Kala Akademi and the Ministry of Culture are making efforts to encourage the sale of artworks.

The President said that art should not remain confined to art galleries but should reach schools, universities, public spaces and wider sections of society. She urged all stakeholders to provide ample opportunities to young and emerging artists to develop their talent, explore new mediums and expand their creative potential.

She also felicitated the Grand Prize winners and recipients of Honourable Mentions at the 3rd Print Biennale India 2026.

Describing the award presentation ceremony as a celebration of India’s artistic heritage, cultural diversity and contemporary creativity, the President said the event showcased the country’s rich artistic traditions, creative energy and evolving forms of artistic expression, according to a press release issued by the President’s Secretariat.

The President said that art extends beyond paintings on canvas, sculptures carved from stone and works created through other mediums. It is a reflection of culture, capturing memories, experiences of the present and aspirations for the future. She added that art enables people to perceive and understand their times and society from a fresh perspective.

The President also emphasised the need to equip traditional artists in remote areas with training in new technologies and contemporary art techniques. Such support, she said, would enable them to showcase their skills and participate in competitions on a wider platform.
