Rain brings relief from heat across North India; Delhi records highest October rainfall since 2022

Rainfall across several parts of North India has brought relief from the heat, with temperatures dipping in Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states. The national capital recorded its highest October rainfall since 2022, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Overnight showers brought cooler conditions to Delhi-NCR on Tuesday morning, while parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan also experienced a change in weather. Rainfall and cloudy skies have contributed to a decline in temperatures, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.

According to the IMD’s forecast for October 13, rainfall is expected across 23 states and Union Territories, with heavy showers likely in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Moderate rainfall is forecast for Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Lakshadweep, while light showers are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The weather department has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds at isolated locations.

Delhi-NCR has experienced cloudy skies, gusty winds and intermittent rainfall since Sunday night, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures. The showers have brought cooler mornings and evenings, with some residents opting for light warm clothing while stepping outdoors early on Tuesday.

Although temperatures are expected to remain relatively cooler during the morning and night, daytime conditions could remain comparatively warm under clear skies.

Meanwhile, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms lashed Delhi in the early hours of Monday, marking the city’s highest October rainfall since 2022.

According to the IMD, the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s base weather station, recorded 41.6 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

The observatory last recorded higher rainfall in October on October 9, 2022, when approximately 74 mm of rain was registered.

The recent showers have brought a seasonal shift in weather conditions across parts of northern India, providing relief from the heat as temperatures gradually decline.
