Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday presented the prestigious President’s Colour to the Chandigarh Police on the occasion of its 60th Raising Day and Diamond Jubilee celebrations at the Police Lines in Chandigarh.
The honour recognises the force’s contribution to maintaining law and order, tackling terrorism and ensuring security in the region.
Addressing the gathering, Shah recalled the challenges faced by Chandigarh during the period of terrorism and commended the courage and commitment displayed by the police personnel in safeguarding the city and the country.
He said that although Chandigarh is a planned city situated in the foothills of the Shivalik mountains, it was not untouched by terrorism. During that challenging period, the Chandigarh Police demonstrated courage and took decisive action to protect the city and the nation.
Highlighting Chandigarh’s administrative significance, Shah noted that since November 1, 1966, the city has served as a Union Territory and the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. He also pointed out that constitutional institutions of both states, along with their Chief Ministers and senior officials, are based in Chandigarh.
The Home Minister further appreciated the coordination between the Chandigarh Police and the police forces of Punjab and Haryana in managing security across the tri-city region.
He said the Chandigarh Police, comprising more than 6,000 personnel across various wings, including the Crime Wing, Operations Cell, Security Wing, Traffic Police and PCR, had performed its duties exceptionally well and established benchmarks for police forces across the country.
Earlier, Shah took to X to mark the occasion, stating that the Chandigarh Police was completing 60 years of dedication, discipline and public service. He also shared the live proceedings of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, during which the force was conferred the President’s Colour.
