Australian High Commissioner reiterates importance of Quad in maintaining peace in Indo-Pacific

Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green has said the Quad grouping is focused on practical cooperation to build a stronger, more prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the continued collaboration among India, Australia, Japan and the United States.

In a post on X on Monday, Green said the four countries were working together to address economic opportunities and challenges affecting the region.

His remarks come after the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 31, where the foreign ministers of the four countries reviewed progress on ongoing initiatives and reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

According to the joint statement issued after the meeting, the ministers emphasised the importance of economic security in maintaining global stability and prosperity. They also reiterated their commitment to developing reliable and open global supply chains and trusted, resilient infrastructure.

The ministers expressed concern over economic coercion, arbitrary export restrictions and non-market policies and practices that could disrupt supply chains in critical industries.

Maritime security also featured prominently in the discussions. The ministers stressed the importance of protecting critical sea lanes and ensuring uninterrupted trade, energy security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The joint statement also highlighted cooperation in emerging technologies, particularly Super Intelligence (SI), and initiatives such as Pax Silica. The four countries expressed their intention to provide more than 85 million dollars in technical and financial assistance to support access to trusted Super Intelligence across the Indo-Pacific, including through the Quad SI Accelerator.

The ministers also raised concerns over the growing threat posed by online and cyber scams. They condemned criminal networks involved in operating scam centres and human trafficking, committing to work together to dismantle such operations and hold transnational criminal groups accountable.

The joint statement further expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the flash floods of August 26, 2026. It acknowledged India’s role as the first responder in Nepal’s rescue efforts, alongside assistance extended by other Quad countries.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, following the meeting, highlighted stability, prosperity, freedom of choice, resilient supply chains and action against non-market practices as key priorities for the grouping.

Jaishankar held discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong during the meeting.

The Quad, or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, brings together India, Australia, Japan and the United States. The grouping works through consultations and cooperation on regional and global issues, with a focus on a free, open and stable Indo-Pacific.
