The Indian Navy on Thursday took delivery of ‘Amini’, an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
The vessel has been designed and constructed by GRSE in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
Amini is among the largest Indian naval warships propelled by waterjets and is equipped with advanced lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems to detect and engage underwater threats.
The vessel is expected to strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare, coastal surveillance and mine-laying capabilities.
Named after Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, the ship carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Amini, a Petya III-class anti-submarine warfare corvette that was decommissioned in 2002.
The delivery marks another milestone in the Indian Navy’s efforts to promote indigenous shipbuilding under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
With over 80 per cent indigenous content, the vessel reflects the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing sector and ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on imports.
