Spain wrote a new chapter in its football history. On August 20, Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final to lift its first-ever trophy. The match created several records, capping off a tournament that has broken attendance and TV records and raised hopes of a surge in interest for the women’s game.

A goal from Spain’s Olga Carmona made all the difference between the two teams that ultimately led to a new world cup champions. Carmona, a left back, has scored in back-to-back World Cup games for Spain. Also, the Spanish team has a tournament-best 18 goals in this World Cup.

With this win, Spain also became only the second nation to clinch both the men’s and the women’s World Cups after Germany.

England and Spain were both making their first appearance at a Women’s World Cup final. The Sunday’s match turned Spain’s dream into reality but for England, the wait continues for a first trophy since the men’s tournament in 1966.

“It’s a dream come true. We’re all really happy, especially for Spain. I think it was time for us to win a tournament like this. We hope everyone is proud and it is time to enjoy it,” said Claudia Zornoza, Spain’s midfielder after the win.

On the other hand, England’s captain Millie Bright said that although heartbroken, she was proud that the team made it to the World Cup final. She also promised of bouncing back.

Meanwhile, Sweden defeated host country Australia 2-0 to settle on the third position. Co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the ninth edition of the global showpiece event was the first to be held in the southern hemisphere.
