India defeats England in 4 Nations Tournament Dusseldorf, & more sports update

The world of sports is buzzing with thrilling matches, new records and more. A number of sporting events across different sports are taking place in different parts of the world. On one hand, the Spanish Women’s football team successfully brought the trophy home for the first time, on the other, in tennis, Spain Carlos Alcaraz went down to Novak Djokovic.

Here are some of the major news from the world of sports, buzzing at the moment.

Cricket:

— India on Monday announced the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup with captain Rohit Sharma leading the men in blue. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have returned to the team recovering successfully from their injuries. The others on the squad include Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (VC), Ravindra jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Sanju Samson is in the standby.

India’s Asia Cup campaign begins on 2 September against Pakistan in Kandy, Sri Lanka before they face Nepal at the same venue two days later. Meanwhile, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy was displayed at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

— The Indian Junior Men’s Team defeated England to secure their 2nd place in the 4 Nations Tournament Dusseldorf 2023. India thrashed the English team 4-0 to seal the match. Rajinder Singh, Amir Ali, Amandeep Lakra and Araijeet Singh Hundal hit the goal for India.

Chess:

— R Praggnanandhaa, the first Indian after Vishwanthan Anand to reach the semifinals of the FIDEWorldCup, drew against his higher-ranked opponent Fabiano Caruana, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In the other semi-final, former world champion Magnus Carlsen defeated Nijat Abasov in the first game with white pieces.

Badminton:

— Badminton World Championships 2023 began today. Shuttlers like Prannoy, Srikanth Kidambi, Kenta Nishimoto and more are participating in the event.

Tennis:

— Novak Djokovic made a return to the US circuit with a win in Cincinnati. He defeated Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 5-7 7-6(7) 7-6(4) to lift his 95th career ATP title.

Wrestling:

— The U20 Wrestling Championships concluded on August 20, and Team India gave its best ever performance with 4 gold , 3 silver and 7 bronze medals, finishing 2nd overall in the tournament, held in Italy.

The Greco Roman team delivered 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Meanwhile, the Men’s Freestyle team gave 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medal.

Athletics:

— After a hiatus of 9 long years, Indian gymnast Ashish Kumar made a comeback at FIG International Pharaoh’s Cup, winning a bronze medal in Floor Exercise event at the tournament.

— At the World Athletics Championships, Budapest, Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei becomes the men’s 10,000m world champion.

Squash

— The 15-year-old Anahat defeated Hong Kong’s Ena Kwong 3-1 in the final on Sunday to win the gold medal. Anahat became 1st ever Indian female Squash player to win this title (U17 category). Last year, Anahat had won U-15 Asian title.
