Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited by President Joko Widodo of Indonesia to visit Jakarta on September 6th and 7th. During this visit, he will participate in the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit, which Indonesia is hosting as the current Chair of ASEAN.
Notably, this upcoming ASEAN-India Summit marks the first such gathering since the elevation of India-ASEAN relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. The Summit’s agenda includes a comprehensive review of the progress in India-ASEAN relations and the formulation of future cooperation strategies.
In an official statement by Ministry of External Affairs, the East Asia Summit would provide an opportunity for Leaders of ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to exchange views on issues of regional and global significance.
Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Indonesia will mark his second trip to the country within a year. Previously, he was in Indonesia in November 2022 to attend the G20 summit held in Bali.
It is important to note that Indonesian President Joko Widodo is slated to chair a total of 12 meetings during the 43rd ASEAN Summit, scheduled to occur at the Jakarta Convention Center from September 5th to 7th. These meetings encompass a range of important sessions, such as the 43rd ASEAN Summit plenary session, the 43rd ASEAN Summit retreat session, the 26th ASEAN-China Summit, the 24th ASEAN-South Korea Summit, the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum, and the symbolic handover of the ASEAN chairmanship to Laos.
